For our weeklong workshop with visiting artist Elizabeth Huey, we headed to Iowa. After a two-hour lecture on Transcendental Meditation at Maharishi University in Fairfield, we went to visit Grant Wood’s American Gothic house in nearby Eldon. A block away from the house we had a flat tire. While waiting for the tow truck, we were able to secure the Bingo Hall at the Wapello County Fair for a one-night show.
With a prime location next to the barn where the Fair Queen was being judges, Workshop participants hung the work they had made over the previous days. Subjects included the Oddfellows Club in Clear Lake, fireflies in Ottumwa, and the Golden Dome of Pure Knowledge in Fairfield. Frames for the show were found in the basement of the Hotel Ottumwa and generously loaned to us for the evening.
